Legendary editor, journalist, and publishing entrepreneur Terry McDonell will join us as speaker for this year's Attwood Memorial Lecture. McDonell will reflect on a life spent in the fast-paced, high-stakes publishing business as he presents his recent memoir, The Accidental Life: An Editor’s Notes on Writing and Writers.
Over the last four decades, McDonell has been at the helm of some of the most influential beacons of American journalism: from his early days at Outside through tenures at Rolling Stone, Newsweek, Esquire, Sports Illustrated, and, most recently, as cofounder of LitHub. Now, in this wry, wise, and bitingly funny memoir, he takes us behind the scenes to reveal what really happened between editors and their famous writers. Here are intimate portraits of the most important (and most eccentric) journalists, novelists, and media personalities: from Hunter S. Thompson and George Plimpton to Richard Ford and James Salter; from David Carr and Steve Jobs to Jimmy Buffett and one remarkable Sports Illustrated swimsuit model. A light reception at 6pm will precede the lecture.
Terry McDonell has won numerous awards for his editorial work at various magazines and websites. He is also a novelist and poet, and has written and produced for film and television. In 2012 he was inducted into the American Society of Magazine Editors’ Hall of Fame. He is the president of the board of the Paris Review Foundation and serves on the Board of Overseers of the Columbia Journalism Review. He lives in New York City.
The William Attwood Memorial Lecture honors a longtime New Canaanite, William Attwood. In the course of his career he helped define the times as well as shape the causes in which he believed. By enabling the Library to present distinguished speakers, the lecture honors Bill’s memory and his lifetime interests in journalism, government, literature and politics.
The Accidental Life will be available for purchase at the event courtesy of Elm Street Books.
